CACHA Board Members

Dr. Don Kilby - President and Founder
Dr. Don Kilby has been on the forefront of HIV and AIDS in Canada for more than 25 years. He has been a primary care provider and director at the University of Ottawa Health Services (UOHS) since 1980. He has chaired several advisory committees including the federal Ministerial Council on HIV/AIDS, the Ontario Advisory Committee on HIV/AIDS and the Ottawa-Carleton Counsel on HIV/AIDS. In 2006 he was a recipient of an Ontario Award for Good Citizenship. Dr Kilby has been a strong advocate for legal acces to healthcare for marginalized populations including the poor, the homeless, injection drug users and immigrant populations. He founded the Canada Africa Community Health Alliance in 2001, which has built strategic alliances between Canadian and African community based organizations and governments. CACHA has worked to offer improved infrastructure support, medical care, HIV prevention, care, treatment and support, as well as learning opportunities to rural african communities.



Cathy Cleary - Secretary

International Impact Facilitator, MatRx Financial Group, 
supporting small –medium African businesses to grow and prosper

Cathy fell in love with the people and the island of Ukerewe, Tanzania when she first visited as co-lead, with Carol White, of the fall 2009 caravan. Since 2011, she has been the team lead each fall and is currently working on a number of additional projects related to agriculture, education, and vulnerable children and families. She also travels to Democratic Republic of Congo where she has initiated a women’s training centre for women displaced from their villages due to the ongoing conflict. Cathy has been working in the field of community health for over 20 years and her Master’s in Public Administration is focussed on the health sector. She joined the CACHA Board member in 2013.


David Beking - Grants/Proposals Lead

David Beking is currently completing his PhD at the University of Ottawa. He is a graduate of Queen’s University with a Master’s in Public Health as well as a graduate of the Health Sciences undergraduate program at the University of Ottawa. He has been actively involved with CACHA since April 2010 as a volunteer in Uganda. After graduating that year, he lived in Ukerewe, Tanzania for eight months as a CACHA field health officer through the internship program. Returning in June, 2011 he worked in the CACHA office on fundraising events before heading off to Queen's University in September. Joining the board of directors in October 2011, he now manages student volunteer and internship opportunities for CACHA.


 Nini Cohen- Country Lead (Bénin)

Retired pediatric nurse having worked for 33 years at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Prior to that, Nini worked in a small hospital in Ghana as a CUSO volonteer from 1969 to 1971.

   Christopher Fisher - Interim Treasurer

Chris Fisher has been a member of CACHA since April 2004. In that same year, he accepted our offer to become head of the Tanzania Project Committee and has since led and participated in seven missions to the Himo/Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. He became Vice-President of CACHA in 2005. Chris has an Honours BA from the University of Western Ontario in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations and Development. He has extensive knowledge in the area of Anti-Retroviral Treatment and Research. This knowledge stems from his four years of employment with two pharmaceutical companies marketing HIV products and, more recently, as Director of Operations at the University of Ottawa Health Services, where he is heavily involved in the HIV clinical research program. His work has enabled him to travel extensively to attend many international conferences on the subject of HIV/AIDS and he remains very committed to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

  David Sachs - Communications and Fund Development Lead

David Sachs is a writer of fiction and non-fiction. He has extensive professional and volunteer experience in communications, as well as volunteer experience in logistics, volunteer management and fundraising in a non-profit.

He first volunteered with CACHA in 2007, and is the current communications and fund development lead on the board.
